Unfairness of Luck?

Interesting question from one of my casino buddies… Never really thought about it and would like to know what fellow Replayers think: Why do some people win the lottery twice and others never win a penny? Or in poker, why do some players get Quads and a Royal Flush within a few hands and others are over the moon to see a middle pair once in the tournament? Maybe a piece of hyperbole but still, are some people luckier than others (irrespective of skill)? I know about probability laws but the required sample sizes don’t help anyone with a human lifespan

Absolutely. I know a guy that won over $100,000 in lottery scratch tickets 5 times. There is no skill in that. Some people have all the luck.

I’m sure there is no definitive answer to that, but all I’ll say is, it comes and goes. Make the most of it when it comes your way.

I believe some are indeed, luckier than others at times and sometimes for a period of time. However, I have also seen people loose their winning’s very quickly, due to overconfidence and/or greed. Whether it’s the Lottery or Poker, cash or play chips. Bankroll management is always the key to success.

If you don’t have the lucky charm then just take the money and run :joy:

Amen to that, live to play either Lotto or Poker, cash or play games another day at the same amount, or slightly higher than you were. And whenever you, are Truly Blessed provide for those in need. I can’t take anything with me when I leave this world.

Some folks are just born with a horseshoe up their butt.

This sounds like an example of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy.

In short, a shooter fires a rifle at the side of a barn. He then looks for the tightest cluster, then draws a target around that cluster and declares himself a sharpshooter.

What’s the relevance? Luck is truly random. If nobody ever won the lottery twice, it would actually be proof that the lottery were UNfair. Because the lottery is random, some people will win it multiple times. We call those people, like the cluster of shots near the center of the hastily-drawn bullseye, “lucky.”

Lucky is when you get more than you asked for at the ATM. Unlucky is when you walk away with your card still active in the ATM :atm: twice !

Just refer to the bell curve. All things in nature fit the bell curve and that include luck. Some people are very lucky, some very unlucky, and most are somewhere in the middle.

I believe it’s a mixture of 3 things. First a little bit of luck. Second depending on the player, a certain amount of skill. Third is the programing of the game itself. Also there is always that one person that can step in deep $#$# & always come out smelling like a rose!!!

I am a firm believer that if you took six players from this game & sat them all down together in person to play each other you would have a totally different outcome.

You are so right. But my horseshoe seems to be an intermittent thing. :sunglasses: :upside_down_face:

Life isn’t fair but everyone has ups and downs. Think we have some say in what happens to us!
I due believe some have more luck than others. Most can hit a winning stretch and ride it for all its worth. Losing stretch need to be held to minimum and sometimes that isn’t possible.

I think that skill plays a higher role thank luck in live tournaments not controlled by a random number generator. However; I have found that the random number generator of replaypoker is somewhat lacking in reproduction real world dealing. I have seen in more occasions that after a play, the next hand delt will almost invariably be a certain card. This could happen 2-3 times in a row to me. This does not happen when I play live non-computer tournaments. Your programmers need to re-look at the code for your random number generator.

One player remarked that I was very lucky. I replied “is that a bad thing?” I know I’m lucky but I also have some skill. In certain situations (pot size, stack size, number of out cards I’ll try to catch on the river). As one person said I remember the times I catch and forget the times I don’t. Luck is a part of the game but needs to be skillfully applied.

Luck is luck, but it is also dependent. A “skilled” player will draw a line at what cards he will play. whether suited, paired, or “power” of the hand. Then the luck comes in. As we have all experienced AA being clobbered by 2 7 off suit only to see 2 7 2 on the flop. A good player will fold dozens of woulda been winners in an MTT, because those winning cards were rags before the flop. So, luck is both a matter of skill, and yet arbitrary at the same time. Reading your opponent is true skill, and some say it cannot be done online, true to a point. Good luck gaming, but mostly have fun. The chips are free!!

Yes Jonahh some people are permanently lucky irrespective of skill and they can keep it up for a lifetime .Years ago I read a very interesting article by a poker pro who did a computer analysis of the hands of wildly successful online limit holdem players usually mulitabling ten or more tables. Some of these guys were winning 50K a year playing 3-6 limit and had huge hand totals of 500000 hands or more. Yes they were just plain lucky. Got more sets, hit the flop with AK etc at rates above statistical probability and absolutely statistically significant. Your last line “with a human lifespan” should be well considered by readers. If you are losing at money poker and it is destroying you financially, give it up !! Do not destroy yourself. Play money poker ? Well have fun, if you can.!!!
