The Difference between Free and "Real" poker

REAL MONEY

this is more like checkerplay money is nothing like the real deal,no matter how hard you guys try to convince yourselfs lol

While Coder is correct in theory, if you don’t have the right Leverage to make that move, often it still doesn’t work. Plus its not only online poker, its free chip online poker.

Cronk, when I play HU, in a MTT… thats for 1st/2nd, neither player (usually) is a Bozo. I have gotten run over and seen ppl get run over on TV more times than I can remember. Very quickly, I usually revert to a shove/fold mentality. If I like or have a good feeling about my 2 cards, I shove (preflop)… otherwise I fold. God help anyone who gives me a free look, or a cheap look if say I’m sb… then I’ll see the flop, but I’m still thinking shove/fold. ( this also works during any unlim rebuy period, NEVER give me a cheap look @ the flop ) so most of the time I will shove Q10 suited, 1/2 the time I will also shove if they are offsuit. I’m no Bozo, but I will go against any 2 cards you have, as long as I’m acting before you are. If my “perception” is you didn’t make the right move ( bet size ) @ the right time ( when acting 1st ), then prolly 90% I’m shoving there.

I mentioned Leverage, so lets examine that. In a SnG-MTT , Leverage is more prevalent, while on a Ring table… Leverage is usually only who has the biggest stack and/or the biggest bank roll, because yet again that Ring table is a unlim rebuy situation, bankroll dependant.

I suspect that there are many players, just like me, who… if there’s NO juice (risk) involved, its pretty boring. I can drop levels, play where the risk is almost 0, and 85% of the time I walk away with profit, thats boring to me. If I ever want to be #1 around here ( never gonna happen ), I Must endure bordom, or flat out get really lucky.

Therefore especially on a ring table, I’m constantly ask’n myself to calculate Leverage. So lets take your example, but lets assume its a Ring table.

Flop is K 9 6 (rainbow), I’m holding AK ( lets assume its un-suited ) 6 players see flop.
( Coder is spot on, deny equity, but that should’ve occured pre-flop )
1 of those 5 players will hold a draw, hopefully it is NOT the open-ended one. You have basically lost your chance @ leverage. Why, because with 6 ppl see’n the flop, in order for you to price out anyone, its gonna cost you a decent chunk, and if just 1 person in early posistion (to u) calls you, others now are price’d IN to also call. This is a recipie for disaster.

Lets look @ what possibly you are facing, shall we :
any non pair like AQ, 1 pair with/without a good kicker, 2 pair, trips, any open-ended AND inside Str8 draw. Are you still that confident on your Top Pr, Top kicker ??? Way too many players use fear psychologically here against thier opponents. Especially if they have NO inherrant risk. If you are not UTG (1st to act), you’re pretty SOL here, unless you, again have no inherrant risk too. I don’t use a odds-calc, but if you plug in all those possibilities, except all the non pairs… I bet your odds are pretty small to win the hand. You odds prolly are better than most other people, but thats only if 2pr or trips is NOT what they have. Those people have better odds than you do.

You have 2 options as I see it here, throw out a feeler bet repp’n the K or better ( so your risk is less and its easier to fold to a raise ), or check , hoping the real hand will expose themselves so you can fold.

Why do I say this, well cause I only play online currently for free chips. I also know the tendancies of alot of players around here, and just how often suck-outs happen. Its very hard here , on a ring table , to have the correct leverage. Either you have a reputation as a player, have a huge bankroll, or have the table stack’d by a large margain ( you need 3x++ the next highest stack on the table to have the table stack’d by that large margain ) … to have a chance @ correct leverage.

Lets reset this table, assuming you will be UTG on the flop, its a ring table, and you are NOT the big stack, and you don’t have a huge table presence ( just by sitting down, you really don’t scare anyone ) ( lets say 10k/20k, buyin 1-3m, 9 max) ( hypothetically )

Button:
Cronkbrast ( sb ) - 2m stack - 22m bankroll
V1 ( bb ) - 1.8m stack - 48m bankroll
Vx - folded preflop
V2 - 2.9m stack - 21m bankroll
V3 - 1.3m stack - 875m bankroll
Vx - folded preflop
V4 - 4.3m stack - 175m bankroll
Vx - folded preflop
V5 - 9m stack - 12m bankroll

Lets say someone minraised preflop, and those 6 called, so pot is 240k.
Because obviously you sloplay’d preflop, whom do you have Leverage on ?
Maybee but not really V2, and perhaps V5… everyone else NOPE.

Thats simple :

  1. its free chip online poker
  2. Way too many ppl , have way too many chips compared to others, basically little or no inherant risk involved.
  3. In this hypothetical, the person with the correct leverage, chose for whatever reason, NOT to excercise thier right preflop, letting play continue.
  4. Someone might’ve sloplay’d something better than your AK

Does that help any ?
Sassy

I’ve not read all the comments, but I think it important, when considering the difference between free vs. play money, is that yet another distinction has to be made. Are we talking cash tables or tourneys? It has already been established in earlier threads that the two games have little in common (regarding tactics and strategy). So let me ask this question, if someone was bankrolling 100% of your play, would you rather play a tourney or sit down at a no-limit cash game? What if you were bankrolling yourself?

I think another consideration to be made is where are you playing? Are you in a basement home game, or sitting in the Bellagio’s poker room, or a tribal casino?

I think it may also have something to do with the poor bet sizing of many free poker players.

For example, let’s say I have A 7 of clubs, and I limp into a pot. The flop comes with one club and one seven. A small bet is made,so I call, on the assumption that any Ace, any 7, and any club will improve my hand. So there are 15 cards that will improve my hand on the turn.

I call that small bet and another club comes on the turn. Now I have 14 outs that will most likely give me the best hand, including 9 nut flushes. So I have a 1 in 4 chance of hitting my outs.

In many cases opponents who have hands that are ahead of mine will not bet enough to price me out of the draw, or depending on relative stack sizes and implied odds of what I think I could win on the river if I make my outs or the runner runner nut flush.

So the more often a player is drawing to a nut flush on the river, the more often runner runner flushes will win hands.

I played REAL poker since i was 13 (for cash) and even lucky enough after 8 LONG grinding straight years of 7 stud in A.C. to have enough money to buy a decent house…I am older now and still play SMALL cash games online (casino a little 2) and had to learn this new game hold-em (me old lol). Here on re-play poker i played with MANY players who are way better than many cash players i play (and played) with. When i tell them to play cash games so they could make money they just lol and say they enjoy playing here on re-play poker and it is stress free and no interest in money:).

I see a lot of people’s poker tips on here and many are great BUT if you just have patience and “play the player” you will be fine.

Players aren’t as likely to go all in with nothing when they actually have money to lose. Nothing to lose here, so people blast anything all in. They eventually lose it all because they aren’t good players, but it’s frustrating for those that are trying to play poker. Players that are really risking something tend to be more averse to losing their money. I’ve said it before that I detest limping with hands that I’d put money in with in a real game, but with so many fish going all in it’s best to limp, call with marginal hands, and blast away when you have the nuts. If you open raise a large amount and you have several fish at the table, at least one will generally play. Quite often more than one. Because more than one often plays, it’s much easier to get AA or KK cracked.

OH, in person u can see tails but online u play with the same people u see how they play pretty fast.

Yep, sucks having 5 players chase you to the river…:).

Hi,

When I worked in real casino poker rooms, every now and then we would get a player in who usually played in a local bar poker tournament or online poker. They would soon start complaining how we not doing things correctly.
I would go over and listen to them and then say,
"Ok here is the difference. Bar poker tournaments and online poker tournaments are just like our casino poker tournaments, except here we have rules.
What I am trying to say is that in online poker tournaments, the computer makes all the decisions automatically. There are no human mistakes by players or dealers. You can not get a read on the other players by watching their faces or their body language.
It truly is, apples and oranges.
Online play helps, but it will not make you a winning live casino poker player. For that you must pay your dues by putting in your hours playing at the live table.

Have a nice day,
David

Hi @puggywug ,

My observation is there will be less limpers in real money cash game vs play money in cash and tournament games overall.

And less players just sitting down at the table and immediately going all in.

The difference is night and day, also, easy to push a button for all your chips but in person putting it all in the pot-hmmmmm lol.

better play with real

Real poker, there’s actually something to lose, your money. Free poker, it doesn’t matter whether you play tight or go all in, you know you’ll still have free chips the next day. That’s why there are so many “All inners”, nothing to lose. Actually as I’ve continued playing here, I’ve learned to put players on ranges, have a better understanding of where a player is in the hand, better able to read board textures, etc. Because of that, it’s helped me in real online games. Consequently, my winnings exceed my bad days and I keep improving. I don’t think the games are great, regardless of the stakes, but it’s a great place to learn and practice, especially practice, if you’re going to play for real.
