How to choose chips and cards for playing poker?

A ready-made poker set or buying elements separately?
In fact, it’s up to you to decide, But let’s look at this issue in more detail.

:green_circle: So, what is the advantage of a ready-made poker set?

Plus. Obviously, this is more convenient. It can be a wonderful gift for your friends or loved ones.
The minus is, of course, the quality of what you get in such a set. Usually such sets are not of high quality in terms of the wear resistance of its components.

:green_circle: Chips and cards as separate elements.

Minus. The downside is the lack of a storage case. No button dialer.
On the plus side: You don’t buy what you don’t need. In fact, you only need chips and cards. Even without a button button, you can do without.

Poker Cards.
The variety of maps today is really amazing. Let’s look at what you should pay attention to.

:green_circle: Material.

The material from which the cards are made directly depends on their quality - that is, wear resistance.

The cheapest and most affordable card decks are made of cardboard. Of course, you can buy them at any store, at a very attractive price, but the quality leaves much to be desired. Unaesthetic appearance and low wear resistance. Not to mention how easy it is to turn such cards into marked ones.

The wear resistance of cards with a plastic coating is slightly higher. Such cards are made of paper materials, but they have a plastic coating. It cannot be said that these cards will last you much longer, but their cost is also low.

Fully plastic cards are currently the best option for poker. High wear resistance makes them a really worthwhile choice. Of course, such cards are more expensive, but their service life is much higher.

It can be noted that plastic also happens to be different and the most durable cards are cards made of acetylcellulose. But they are very expensive and even casinos use ordinary plastic cards.

:green_circle: The number of cards in the deck, the index of the deck.

The number of cards in the deck, the index of the deck. It’s pretty simple here. A full deck (52 cards) is always more functional than a short deck (36 cards).
Speaking of the index, there is a color index: there are two-color and four-color cards. Here everything again depends on your preference, but traditionally a two-color deck is used.
There is also an index of the size of the designations directly on the map. There are: Peek index (the smallest designations of numbers and suits), standard index (small designations of numbers and suits), Jumbo (medium-sized designations), Magnum (large-sized designations).
And again, everything here depends only on your preferences.

:green_circle: Card back.

You will be surprised, but this choice should be taken quite seriously. The fact is that the more complex the drawing on the outside of the card, the easier it is to leave inconspicuous marks on such cards (map marking).
Thus, there is no need to chase after something unusual and you need to prefer the most technically simple drawings.
Also, the drawing should not be solid: for a poker game, a white indent along the diameter of the card is also very important (for the same reason).

Summing up, paying attention to all the nuances, you just have to choose the professional manufacturer of your future cards. Nevertheless, it is worth stocking up on several decks, regardless of the choice.
Chips.
Choosing the chips that you will like and that will last you long enough is quite simple, but it’s worth paying attention to a few nuances.

:green_circle: Material.

There are only a few types of chips, if we consider them by material.

Plastic chipsare the most inexpensive option. Such chips are often used in poker sets. The texture is slippery, the quality of the plastic is usually low, although the wear resistance is quite good. Such chips are often made without a denomination, or with ordinary stickers.

Chips made of Compositional material. In fact, these are also plastic chips, but they have an iron weighting inside. The most interesting thing is that the heavier such a chip is, the higher the quality of the plastic used to create it. Such chips are affordable and last quite a long time.

Ceramic chips. Despite their name, such chips are made from a mixture of ceramic crumbs and plastic crumbs. However, such chips are much more expensive than the previous options. The quality of their manufacture is excellent: they are pleasant to the touch, aesthetic in appearance, quite heavy and in most cases, they are not just glued with naminal stickers - they are literally sealed on them with the help of special technologies. These are the chips used in the casino. The disadvantage is the high cost and more fragile material. Although, if we talk about wear resistance, casino chips change every 5-6 years, so we can say that at home, they are likely to last you a really long time.

Clay chips. Another option for expensive chips. There are chips made of so-called porcelain clay and they are really fragile. Despite the aesthetic appearance, they are really fragile and they can literally be broken, even if you don’t have much strength. Such chips are practically not used anywhere. But there are other clay chips. they are made of premium-class clay chips and thanks to the manufacturing technology, such chips are not inferior to ceramic ones. However, they are also practically not used anywhere else.

:green_circle: How many chips do we need and where to buy them?

The number of chips will depend directly on how many people will be in your company of players. It is usually recommended to take 300 chips (a set of chips of different naminals). This amount is quite enough for a game of six or even nine people, if you reduce the number of blinds in the starting stack of each. To buy chips, it is better to give preference to specialized stores and when buying, it is always necessary to clarify how limited the batches of exactly those chips that you plan to purchase are. This needs to be clarified in order to understand whether you will be able to buy these chips.

:green_circle: Weight, Size, The presence of a denomination on the chips.

These points are worth considering. If you plan to buy more chips, just check that the characteristics (weight, size) do not differ.
Make a decision about whether the denomination will be indicated on your chips or not. Most prefer chips with a denomination, for convenience reasons. Of course, chips without specifying the denomination give you the opportunity to independently determine the denomination, but, as practice shows, this is quite inconvenient, since everyone will need to remember how much each chip costs.
When choosing chips with a denomination indication, take care to choose chips with high-quality application (simple stickers are not the best choice).

Hi Maxogon15

Nice Topic

Ive never really looked into buying chip sets or Cards becuase very early on in my days of playing online poker i won a really nice chip set and deck in a metal case for a promotion tournament for making the top 10

I still have that same set and have not used it a whole bunch as i play online.

I also know card decks with descrepences have been used by professional gamblers to cheat or gain an edge in many different variants of card games.

Look forward to hear others thourghts.

Thank you for your comment.
Indeed, fraud is not uncommon at home games: even when you play in a circle of people you know. There will always be a dark horse who will not miss the opportunity to cheat. In this regard, it is necessary to pay special attention to the choice of cards.
Cards made of completely plastic material with the simplest possible card back pattern and the absence of a pattern around the perimeter of the card are the key to success.
The fact is that the quality of such cards will not allow players to make any marks on the cards, which means that the game will be fair.

Of course, it is better to fork out for cards from professional manufacturers. Personally, I have changed not one or even two dozen kalods during the game (not only in poker).

In our youth, we loved to get together and play a game called “1000”. This is a really interesting game with an incredible number of rules, penalties and other nuances, requiring constant mathematical calculations and discipline of the game. One game could last two days when we played. To this day, we can afford to buy a bottle of whiskey and play this game all evening. Of course, the cards wear out very quickly with such active use.

Interesting topic! I will definitely refer to this post if I start hosting home games again. I also didn’t think of cheaters in home games since the stakes are fairly low and it is among people we know…however, I will keep a sharper eye out now!

I definitely prefer high quality cards like COPAG or KEM. Regular cards just get bent and are too easy to have marks that can be seen so have to be replaced. Denominations on the chips helps but can be too restrictive. Also, the consideration of the colors of the chips is super important. If any of the colors are too close, it can cause so much confusion and costly mistakes in betting.

Chips without Denominations pointing to them are more versatile to use, since you can really give them your Denominations other than the standard ones.

But, from the other side: this can really complicate the game, because it will take time to remember which chip has which Denominations. Moreover, each time you will have to explain to new participants of your games which chip has which Denominations. Participants will ask about Denominations again and again, at least for the first time, until they get used to it.
If you suddenly decide to change the values of the Denominations of the chips, it will lead to confusion.

Regarding the colors of the chips: there are generally accepted colors for the chips, depending on their naminal. Therefore, if you use your own Denominations values for chips, it can confuse regular poker players who are used to having a white chip equal to one, a red one equal to five, and a black one equal to a hundred.
I’m not trying to impose my opinion on you, but, from an objective point of view, chips with Denominations cause less problems and make the game more comfortable.:slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the advice and the tips . But I play online nowadays ,it’s been a long time since the last time that I played homegame . If I had to buy chips or a deck of cards I wouldn’t pay attention to all these details . I would buy a deck with nice colour, nice pattern , and that’s all . As for the chips I wouldn’t care how they are . I wouldn’t pay attention to all these details . But as I said I play online , and on holidays or birthdays I have never gifted a card of deck or chips , and I don’t intend to

Well, thank you for your honest opinion and answer. :slightly_smiling_face:

In fact, many people think the same as you. Poker as a game at home is not developed everywhere and in many countries people would really never ask these questions.

But, personally, I gave a poker set 3 times: to my father, husband and friend. They were all delighted with the gift, as this gift really looks spectacular: a metal suitcase with a combination lock, chips, 2 decks of cards, a button, dice.

I think that home games are an American theme, although I think that in any country there are guys who arrange home poker games or even play underground games.

Great topic - because nowadays so many people play online poker ;-)!

I really play only 1-2 times a year with some friends but i would say if somebody wants to buy a nice poker set with a suitcase, chips and 1-2 decks - i would recommend a set round about 60-90 €/$ with enough chips, at least 250 and with 5-8 different values - this is always good when there are 5-8 players at your home game!
Which kind of chips you choose is always a personal thing but i would always choose chips which have a good weight, better heavy than light and a colourfull look.
In my opinion i would only use plastic cards because you can use it for years  and if they get dirty you can clean them easily!

Through all these years I’ve bought many decks of playing cards, but no chips.

When it comes to playing cards, I definite go for plastic cards. They are more expensive, but their quality is better and they are more durable during the passage of time. This is particularly true if you play a lot of poker at home with family, friends, etc. My go-to brand is Modiano playing cards. When it comes to the index of the deck, I do not have specific preferences.

When it comes to chips, I don’t really know, but from the description I read above I would go for ceramic chis or plastic chips. I would like to have chips that closely resemble casino chips, so ceramic chips would be my priority.

Over the years i have bought or won a few beautiful sets of chips-cards etc…I never even opened the boxes and hope to one day use them (with online poker and casinos not much use for them now ).

When I buy cards I like the nylon ones, they are very good, beautiful designs, although expensive, but of very good quality compared to the chips, I really like the ceramic ones.

Hi, Maxogon15.

Hopefully, we all play with players we trust. But you know as soon as money are involved some people can’t stay away from cheating.

How much importance do you place on the design of the card back in relation to potential marking issues? Do you have any specific preferences for card-back patterns in a poker game?

till online poker came around. I always brought a new deck or two (bicycle)
since we were spending money to play it made sense to me. I also purchased a set of custom chips early in life.
very detailed post, great job

Hi Maxogon15!

Really nice article!

I’ve been hosting home games for 8 months now.

Normally 6 to 10 friends come over and we play with a starting stack of 23k chips. (unlimited rebuys until 9th blind, 20min blinds).

In the beginning I had only a set of 100 plastic chips which I had since I was just a boy.

We have always used bicycle “jumbo” cards.

Seeing that people would come over to play I bought more 2 sets of 200 chips each.

And we played for 7 months with these plastic chips.

My friends didn’t mind the material of the chips but everything changed when I managed to buy a set of 700 “Chips made of Compositional material”.

They didn’t have number on them so I made custom labels and the result was just great.

After my friends saw the new chips they became me excited about our “club” and then They wouldn’t want to miss our weekly home game. Now the number of regular players has increased to 13~14.

Just wanted to share this story of how better material chips just changed my home game environment  I will post below a picture of my chips with the custom label.

This is a great topic!! I have a dream of one day I can host a nice home game for my friends. I dream of having a professional poker table and nice clay chips, and invite friends over for hours and hours of game and chill, playing a mix of games, not only Hold’em. I am missing two key things right now: the stuff to play with and the friends to play with

Every two months or so I buy a set of plastic playing cards. I have dozens of them right now. I try to get different models each time, sometimes even ordering from another country, making my own little collection. When the day comes, I will also have a lot of cards to play, despite some of them are too beautiful to play with, or difficult to get, therefore these would be the last ones to be used (if they’re used at all).

The most beautiful playing cards I’ve ever seen and that I really want to get are the Faded Spade plastic cards, both the traditional and the 4-color deck. They are stunning!

I also have some other less expensive cards in mind, like the Teskyer playing cards, who also have a sans-serif jumbo font, making it easy to read the cards too. Also, it is quite easy to find cheap plastic cards to import from Aliexpress and similar sites. They are a great alternative if you want to host a game without caring too much with your cards, because they are $2 or so. I buy some of those frequently.

Here in Brazil I could also find some 2nd line Copag decks for such a good price as $3, and they can also be used fine to play home games (or even at clubs, the only imperfection I found in them was the color of red cards is not too vivid in some of them).

Nice and rare post man!
I think the quality of chips and cards makes the game more interesting and motivates people in “home games”
i agree with that idead! keep it up
