Best poker tip?

true, but I think he’s also saying don’t count your chickens till they’ve hatched. there’ll be time enough to count your winnings when game is done. don’t get to far ahead of yourself.

Well there is a lot to be said for playing the better hands and folding the worst ones, there is more to it than that. You also have to look at your pot odds.

For example you are in the small blind and the big blind on your left is somebody who usually checks and rarely raises. Two players limp and it is now your turn. So you are now getting pot odds of 7 to 1 if you complete your blind and the BB checks. In this position you can play all kind of funky hands, even if you are out of position, because if the flop misses you, you are going to fold any bet, but if the flop hits you hard you will probably win a big pot, because opponents will not expect you to be playing the hand you have.

The biggest mistake that many players make is that they call a min raise from the BB too often with an inadequate starting hand that they have to play from out of position and with insufficient pot odds.

Another factor that has to be taken into account at all times is relative stack size. If you are in a tournament, and you are a big stack, you should open up your calling range in the BB versus a small stack, because if you hit your hand on the flop, you may well be able to stack or completely cripple the opponent. On the other hand if you are a small stack in the BB and there is an early raise from a big stack, it is unwise to call with dominated hands, because you will often be forced to fold to continuation bets, or you may end up losing a large pot when you hit the flop with the dominated hand. For example, you called to raise with King nine, and a king comes on the flop. However if the opponent who raised also has a king, his kicker is much more likely to be AQJT than 8765, so you are in a poor shape. Much better to call with a non-dominated hand.

You can’t win if you don’t play, folding is the least desirable option.

Dont open limp when there are players sitting out.

Raise more, fold more, call less.
