Resources for Beginner players

Hi, I’ve been playing on and off for a while, but recently started playing more. Made my way to 140k chips so I figure it’s time to start learning some strategy.

I figure a lot of advice has been given already but I haven’t seen a collection of the best advice yet, so I’m starting one.

Please post links to your best free resources in the comments, preferably with a short summary (with AI this is easy)
It can be forum posts, videos, basic courses,…
about anything, the rules, basic strategy, bankroll management, how to enjoy the game, how to learn…

I’ll try to keep an organized list in this top post, but no promises I’ll stay active

Here is a start (from the all time top posts)

  • Tournament poker tips: key poker tournament tips for new players, including avoiding premature all-ins, practicing patience, staying aware, minimizing distractions, observing opponents, and identifying personal weaknesses.
  • The biggest mistake that players here make: The biggest mistake in poker is playing too many hands, causing players to lose chips frequently. To capitalize on this, play fewer starting hands, focusing on strong combinations like pocket pairs, suited broadway cards, big unsuited aces, and suited connectors. This tight strategy increases your chances of winning at showdown, leading to more consistent long-term success.
  • “IF THIS HAND WEREN’T SUITED, WOULD I STILL PLAY IT?” If the answer is “no,” then muck it. and other one liners
  • My top 10 holdem tips for Replay: emphasizing big bets with strong hands, assuming opponents are weak, getting chips in while ahead, avoiding frequent preflop all-ins, and generally not min-betting or slow-playing. It also highlights the importance of playing fewer starting hands, understanding position, and being cautious with bluffs due to common calling tendencies.
  • Advanced Techniques for Losing Chips humorously outlines effective strategies for losing poker chips, such as overestimating hand strength in multi-opponent pots, ignoring clear signs to fold against calling stations, light 4-betting and 5-betting against tight players, holding onto hands based on past strength, and bluffing into players who never fold.
  • Who are these winning poker players? Winning at poker involves long-term consistency rather than isolated victories. A single tournament win doesn’t define a winning player; success is measured over many games, where disciplined learning and perseverance lead to a positive balance. True winning players understand and embrace this concept, focusing on continual improvement and long-term results rather than short-term outcomes.
  • 10,000 to 1,000,000 Bankroll Challenge some examples of bankroll strategies
  • Is fear eating your blinds? Fear at the poker table can be mitigated by gaining knowledge, defining goals, and understanding hand ranges, which empowers better decision-making and reduces predictability.
  • NEVER, EVER, limp with AA or KK hoping to trap!
  • New Players - Basic starting hand selections
For beginners in Texas Hold’em, it’s crucial to focus on top-tier starting hands, like AA, KK, QQ, and AKs, which make up the top 2% of hands, while gradually incorporating strong second-tier hands like AK, AQ, and KQs to increase your chances of winning pots.
  • The ART of the Bluff Bluffing in poker should be strategic and logical, focused on convincing opponents of a strong hand while avoiding excessive bluffs, as timing and context are crucial for success.
  • Maximizing Enjoyment
To enjoy poker more, focus on the process and strategy rather than just the outcomes, as this mindset reduces frustration and enhances the overall experience.
  • A “small” guide to improve your (replay)poker strategy This guide outlines poker strategies tailored to different stake levels, emphasizing a straightforward, adaptable approach while highlighting the importance of bankroll management and continuous improvement.
  • How their bad calls can cost you chips - Implicit Collusion Morton’s Theorem suggests that in multi-way pots, a player with the best hand can maximize their expected value when opponents fold correctly, even if draws are chased incorrectly, highlighting how pot size and player decisions affect outcomes.
  • The Links Library oops guess this post already exists, but I’ve put to much effort into this already
  • Comparing Simple Strategies easiest way to be profitable
  • Bankroll Management This guide emphasizes the importance of bankroll management on Replay, advising players to maintain sufficient chip reserves for each game level to avoid big losses and maximize growth, while also suggesting strategies for progressing through different stakes.
  • Unlim Rebuys for Dummies This post discusses strategies for navigating unlimited rebuy MTTs on ReplayPoker, emphasizing the importance of embracing the chaotic nature of such tournaments while providing guidance on bankroll management and player types to expect.
  • Advice “Micro-stakes” players To increase winnings at low/micro stakes poker, focus on not bluffing, playing strong hands aggressively, multi-tabling, being active from late positions, and avoiding tough tables.
  • How to start playing poker
For beginner poker players, focus on playing tight and aggressive, avoid weak hands, understand table position, read board textures, observe opponents’ betting patterns, and be patient, as winning poker can often feel boring.
For complete beginners on free poker sites, it’s beneficial to play many hands and make mistakes to gain experience, while also learning key concepts like pot odds, expected value, and bankroll management to build a solid foundation for future play.
