Yeah, rank is tied to your chips right now – we know it’s not super useful, so we’re working on some stuff for the new client. (Which should be out later this year; we’re doing backend upgrades now.) Personally, I think it’s an important tool for online poker, since you lose a lot by not playing in person.
I’d like to think I’m a very good MTT player, and if it weren’t for me going on mega tilt in ring games then maybe I wouldn’t constantly go bankrupt, but my rank generally never represents my skill.
