This Youtube version is as close to what I remember as I can find. There must be 50 or more versions of Stagolee. I heard this one back in the middle 1960s in a coffee house in San Diego. I wrote down the lyrics as nearly as I can remember them. Iāll post them a little lower in the thread.
These are the Stagolee lyrics as I remember them (of course, itās been 55 years, LOL). The tune was different too, but I canāt find it on line and canāt play it myself.
CHORUS and 1st verse:
Stagolee, Stagolee, heās the meanest boy in town.
When you gamble with Stagolee, you better lay your money down.
Way down in New Orleans is a place, a place they used to call DeLionās Club
And every step you step youāre steppinā in Billy DeLionās blood.
Early one morninā, I heard my bulldog bark.
Stagolee and Billy DeLion was fightinā in the dark.
āStagolee,ā says Billy, āplease donāt you take my life.
Iāve got two little children and a darlinā, lovinā wife.ā
CHORUS
Stagolee says āBilly, Iām bound to take your life.
Godāll take care of your children and you know whoāll get your wife.ā
The Sheriff hung olā Stagolee and he went down to Hell.
Yes, he went down to Hades with the devil for to dwell.
CHORUS
Stagolee says to the Devil āWhy donāt we have some fun.
You stick me with your pitchfork, and Iāll shoot you with my .41.ā
Stagolee took the Devilās pitchfork and he put it upon the shelf.
āNow, you stand back, Tom Devil, Iām gonna rule Hell by myself.ā
CHORUS
Just love this dis of idiots by Tiffany
