I have to say I liked Dolly Parton’s earlier version, too, but Houston’s is showier. Houston had a much larger voice while Dolly’s is both lighter and sweeter.

My personal taste runs to lower female voices like Karen Carpenter, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline, Cher, and the incomparable Ann Murray. I can’t make up my mind which of these two I like better, so here are two very dance-able memories for the future:

I’ve always liked this one. I heard it sung by a bass–not a high tenor, as in this recording–at a wedding and loved it, but can’t find a rendition by a lower voice I like.
